You might look at David Burns' work on cognitive behavioral therapy. This kind of clarification is a core part of his (and really, and very good therapist's) work.

Almost all therapy patients generalize their experience: "I"ve NEVER have any time to exercise."

"Ok, stand up, and let's do arm swings for 10 seconds."

"I can't meditate because I can't sit still."

"Do you ever go to sleep? When you first lie down and your body is absolutely still, take 5 mindful breaths. In fact, let's walk in place, and just be aware you're walking in place. Congratulations, you're meditating!"
