This is the basic principle of dialog: Listen to an opposing view, restate it as best you can, to the satisfaction of someone with an opposing view, then take their view, and try to support it as clearly as you can.

interesting experiment 4 years ago. I invited 10 liberals and 10 conservatives for a dialog experiment.

At the last minute, all 10 conservatives dropped out, saying things like, "I can't be in the room with demonic people," to "I know they're wrong so why bother."

So I invited the 10 liberals who showed up to take opposing views. It was so easy for all of them to do (pro choice and anti abortion, pro trump, anti trump) that it ended up being not so interesting and meanwhile, didn't help with the "going beyond polarization" theme that was the point of the experiment.

This fits with neurological research showing self identified conservatives generally score quite low on "openness to experience" (ie willingness to see other perspectives)

I expect to have some conservatives respond in this way, unwittingly demonstrating my point. But I'll be happy to take on an opposing point of view if you ask.
