There's a nice elaboration on this from Zen teacher Yasutani Roshi. He was speaking about the value of being in the moment, and a student asked if that wasn't a way of escaping from one's responsibilities, that necessarily involve taking into account past and future actions.

Yusatani Roshi drew a point on the board, and then a long vertical and long horizontal line. Indicating the point, he said, "That is the present, the intersection of infinite time (the horizontal line) and infinite space (the vertical line). When you rest calmly in the present moment, the entire universe meets you at that point.
