Paul, you might enjoy looking at Iain McGilchrist's videos on YouTube. If you search for his name + "RSA Animate" you'll find an 11 minute overview.

The way you're thinking about both science and religion is based on a particular form of attention common in the modern world. Prudence is describing a phenomenon requiring a very different mode of attention.

I don't think I can make this clear in a brief comment but if you study McGilchrist, it will be revelatory for you. Science is extraordinary in its capacity to illumine a veyry very limited aspect of our experience. Beyond that it has no relevance. I know this is close to heresy among those who think science is the sole means of true knowledge, but as a scientist who has conducted research, I try whenever possible to defend the scientific endeavor from the tendency to weigh it down with more than it can handle.
