If you observe very carefully, you'll notice there's a background awareness that takes in everything going on in the mind, without reacting to it. relaxing deeply into that background (it's not something you can "see" or know as an object; just relax and you'll catch a glimpse of what it is) then it's possible to direct attention to what's going on in the body, impulses, emotions and mind.
