I would suggest, for anyone confused by the almost unanimous lack of logical rigor and willingness to engage in self examination among the replies of atheists, to look up Iain McGilchrist's work. Look up especially the brief RSA Animate overview of his ideas.
He speaks of 2 modes of attention - one linear, literal, quantitative and narrowly analytic, the other non linear, metaphorical, qualitative, and both analytic and intuitive.
Consider the idea shared by most atheist physicalist/materialists that the only legitimate form of knowledge is in regard to what can be measured.
I think it was Whitehead who explained there are different levels of explanation.
When asked why the water is boiling, you can give a physical level explanation regarding the increased motion of the water molecules - or you can say, "Because I wanted tea."
The attitude that the physical explanation is the only legitimate one is the mode of attention of the materialist and atheist, who sees the 'speeded up molecular action" as the only legitimate explanation. Both explanations are easily understand through the 2nd, more integrative mode of attention, which is most commonly seen in those who understand that underlying popular religion is a non dualist mode of apprehension which is beyond the capacity of any language to reveal in its entirety.
I'm intrigued to see how many will respond, "But the desire to have tea is solely the result of the movement of molecules/atoms/subatomic particles in the purely physical brain."
And that shows the difficulty of talking about other modes of attention when you only have access to one. As Abraham Maslow said, "When the only tool you have is a hammer, everything is going to look like a nail."
I think it was during the Soviet era, that they took St. Petersburg off the map. So for all intents and purposes, you weren't allowed to declare that St. Petersburg existed.
Similarly, if you begin to do science, and forget it's only a method to examine the quantitative aspects of conscious experience, you'll end up thinking that all that exists is what can be quantified. This leads to the most irrational religious belief ever invented by man, the idea that all that is real is information - the great God Information.
And atheists/materialists like to believe they're rational!
