I think I'd trust a Nobel Prize winning physicist over an amateur philosopher on medium!

Contrary to what Murphy writes, nobel prize winning physicist, Steven Weinberg, was horrified when a highly respected physicist friend of his said to him, "You know, science does not explain, it only describes."

Weinberg set out to disprove him by writing an essay for The New York Review of Books, and ended up agreeing (I won't spoil the ending - Weinberg attempts to weasel his way out of it by redefining the word "explanation" - which is pretty much what Murphy does - but spectacularly fails)

So, yes, science does not explain anything. In fact, it's NOT true that scientific explanations "replace" spiritual ones. There's actually not a single experiment ever done that conflicts with the idea that Thor the thunder God is the cause of thunder. Science just deals with a different set of facts - it simply abstracts, from sensory experience available to anyone, certain quantitative relationships. period.

If you think a quantitative relationship has any explanatory power, I suggest taking some time to think about that!
