and yet effect sizes in many psi experiments are stronger than accepted work in many areas of psychology and medicine.

Why?

You haven’t provided any reasonable analysis of why psi is extraordinary. Many areas of science, in all fields of science, accept phenomena for which there is no explanation.

More likely, the reason scientists don’t accept the results is (a) they believe materialism is a reasonable philosophic outlook; and (b) they think materialism is required for science.

In fact, materialism is not even an outlook; it is a set of dogmas with no rational basis; and (b) given the incoherence of the materialist belief system, it is quite obvious that science has done quite well for over 300 years without a materialist basis.
